Ankle pain is often due to a sprain. A sprain can happen when you accidentally twist your foot, through something really simple like a fall or missing a step.
Ankle pain is common and can happen to anyone.
When you sprain your ankle, the pain can be severe and can cause swelling, bruising, and be very tender to the touch.
A sprain can occur when the ligaments that support the ankle become stretched or torn. Seek medical advice if your pain persists.
Try to avoid walking on your injured ankle or doing any strenuous activities.
To get short-term relief try the RICE approach. (Rest, Ice, Comfortable Support, Elevation).1 That involves resting the joint to prevent further injury, applying an ice pack for 15 minutes then for comfortable support use a support bandage to hold it in place.
